Laddered Profit-Taking: Selling in Stages Instead of All at Once
By moonbag.info · · Intermediate
A profit-taking ladder spreads your selling across several pre-planned price levels instead of trying to pick one perfect exit.
How a ladder works
- Pick your levels. For example, gains of +50%, +100%, +200% and +400% over your cost basis.
- Assign a percentage to each rung. For example 20%, 20%, 20%, 20%, leaving 20% as a moonbag.
- Decide how you’ll execute. Manually, or with limit orders where your platform supports them.
- Write it down and review it on a set schedule, not on every price swing.
Example ladder (placeholder asset)
| Rung | Price vs. cost | Sell portion |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | +50% | 20% |
| 2 | +100% | 20% |
| 3 | +200% | 20% |
| 4 | +400% | 20% |
| Moonbag | — | 20% held |

Pros
- Removes the pressure of timing a single top.
- Builds in discipline and reduces emotional decisions.
Cons
- If prices never reach later rungs, you sell less than planned.
- Several sales can mean more fees and more taxable events.
