Hot Wallet vs. Cold Wallet: Which Do You Need?

By moonbag.info · · Beginner

A crypto wallet doesn’t store coins. It stores the private keys that control them on the blockchain. How those keys are stored is the difference between hot and cold.

Hot wallets

Software wallets on a phone, computer or browser that are connected to the internet.

  • Pros: convenient, free, quick for everyday transactions.
  • Cons: bigger attack surface: malware, phishing, malicious browser extensions.

Cold wallets

Keys kept offline, usually on a dedicated hardware wallet device.

  • Pros: keys never touch an internet-connected computer, which greatly reduces remote theft risk.
  • Cons: cost money, less convenient, and you must protect the device and its backup.

A common setup

Many people keep a small “spending” amount in a hot wallet and longer-term holdings in cold storage, much like a wallet versus a safe.

Safety checklist

  • Buy hardware directly from the manufacturer, never second-hand.
  • Write your seed phrase on paper or metal. Never photograph it or store it online.
  • No legitimate support person will ever ask for your seed phrase.
